The Denman buyer's guide

Denman has been engineering professional hairbrushes in Great Britain since 1938. The Original Styler - identified by its half-round shape, anti-static natural rubber pad and smooth round-ended nylon pins - is one of the most copied brushes in the industry and the brush most associated with curl definition, smoothing and tension blow-drying.

Which Denman is right for me?

  • Curly or coily hair, curl definition: Original Styler 7-row (D-3NC or DE-3MC). Use on damp, conditioned hair with a leave-in or curl cream to coil and clump strands.
  • Wavy hair, frizz control: D-3NC 7-row, or the Premium Detangling brush for gentler wet-brushing.
  • Long or thick straight hair, blow-dry smoothing: D-4NC or D-5C 9-row; the extra row of pins delivers more tension per pass.
  • Round-brush blow-outs: match barrel to length and bend - 25mm (short hair, tight bend), 33mm (chin to shoulder), 43mm (shoulder to mid-back), 53mm (long hair, soft bend).
  • Rough-drying or men's styling: D-200C Skeleton Vent or D84 Mini Paddle.
  • Daily detangling: D090LBLKC Premium Detangling for wet hair; D38C Power Paddle for dry detangling on long hair.

How to use the Original Styler on curls (the "Denman method")

  1. Wash and condition; leave hair soaking wet.
  2. Apply a leave-in conditioner, then a curl cream or gel.
  3. Section the hair. Hold the brush horizontally and slowly draw it from root to tip in small sections.
  4. As the brush exits, hair coils between the rows of pins and forms defined curl clumps.
  5. Air-dry, diffuse, or plop. Optional: remove alternate rows of pins to reduce tension on tighter coil patterns.

How to use the Head Hugger for a salon blow-dry

  1. Rough-dry hair to 80 percent with a vent or paddle brush.
  2. Section into 4 to 6 panels. Pick a barrel: 25mm for very short hair, 33mm for shoulder length, 43mm for mid-length, 53mm for long hair.
  3. Wrap each section around the barrel with tension. Direct heat down the cuticle from root to tip.
  4. Cool-shot before releasing to set the bend. Finish with a light shine or smoothing product.

How to clean and care for a Denman brush

  • Pull out shed hair with a tail-comb after every blow-dry.
  • Wash the pad weekly in warm soapy water; rinse and air-dry pin-side down.
  • Do not soak the wooden Head Hugger barrels; wipe the ceramic only.
  • The rubber pad and pin rows on the Original Styler are user-removable for deep-cleaning or to reduce row count for tighter curl patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy authentic Denman brushes in Canada?
Eastern Beauty Supply is an authorized Canadian retailer for Denman and stocks the current professional range with nationwide shipping.

Are Denman brushes made in the UK?
The Original Styler 7-row and Deluxe 9-row brushes are made in Great Britain. The brand has been manufacturing brushes in the UK and Ireland since 1938.

What is the difference between the D3 and the D4 Denman brush?
The D3 family is the 7-row Original Styler. The D4 is the 9-row large styling brush - same staggered pin pattern, but wider with more rows for longer or thicker hair.

What is the difference between the DE-3C, DE-3MC and D-3NC?
All three are 7-row Original Stylers. The DE-3C is the classic handle; the DE-3MC is the black version; the D-3NC is the textured tear-drop handle for better grip and balance.

Which Denman brush is best for curly hair?
The 7-row Original Styler - typically the D-3NC or DE-3MC - is the brush most stylists use for the "Denman method" of curl definition.

Can I remove rows of pins on the Denman?
Yes. The pin rows on the Original Styler clip out of the rubber pad. Many users with tighter coils remove alternate rows to reduce tension and snag.

Which Head Hugger barrel size should I pick?
25mm for short hair and tight bend, 33mm for chin-to-shoulder, 43mm for shoulder to mid-back, 53mm for long hair and a soft bend.

Are Denman brushes heat-safe?
The nylon pins and rubber pad on the Original Styler are heat-resistant for blow-drying. The Head Hugger range is built for heat with a ceramic barrel.

How do I clean a Denman brush?
Remove hair after each use with a tail comb. Wash the pad in warm soapy water weekly and air-dry pin-side down.
