2. How to set up a compliant Barbicide station

  1. Fill a Barbicide Jar with freshly diluted Concentrate (2 oz Concentrate per 32 oz water).
  2. Clean visible hair, product and debris off the tool first -- disinfectant is not a cleaner.
  3. Fully submerge the tool for the contact time stated on the label (typically 10 minutes for full disinfection).
  4. Rinse, dry on a clean towel, and store in a covered drawer.
  5. Change the solution daily, or sooner if it becomes cloudy or contaminated.
  6. Spray or wipe down the chair, headrest and station surface between every client.

3. Concentrate vs Spray vs Clinic -- which one when

4. Barbicide certification

Barbicide Certification and Barbicide COVID-19 Certification are free online courses from King Research that walk through proper disinfection in salons and barbershops. They are widely recognised across Canadian and US salons and beauty schools as the baseline infection-control credential. Certification does not expire on its own, but most salons recertify staff annually so the cert printed on the wall is current.

FAQ

What is Barbicide?
Barbicide is an EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectant made by King Research, used in salons and barbershops since 1947 to disinfect combs, shears, clippers, razors and other implements between clients.

Is Barbicide a disinfectant or a sterilizer?
Barbicide is a disinfectant, not a sterilizer. It kills bacteria, viruses and fungi on cleaned surfaces and tools, but it does not produce sterility the way an autoclave does. For salon and barbershop work, hospital-grade disinfection is the standard required by health boards.

How do I use Barbicide Concentrate?
Dilute 2 oz of Concentrate per 32 oz of water (1:16) in a Barbicide Jar. Clean tools first, fully submerge them, and leave for the contact time listed on the label (typically 10 minutes). Change the solution daily.

Do you dilute Barbicide?
Yes -- Barbicide Concentrate must be diluted before use (2 oz per 32 oz water). Barbicide Spray, Wipes and Solo sachets are ready to use straight from the bottle/pack.

Can I reuse the diluted solution?
Change the solution daily, or sooner if it becomes cloudy, contaminated with hair / product, or after a contaminated tool has been soaked in it.

Can I put scissors in Barbicide?
Yes -- shears, clippers, combs, razors and nail tools can all be disinfected in diluted Barbicide. To protect the finish on expensive shears, rinse and dry them after soaking and oil the pivot regularly.

Can I use Barbicide on nail tools?
Yes. For standard nail tools the original Concentrate is appropriate; for any service where blood exposure is possible, Barbicide Clinic is the higher-level option.

Does Barbicide kill fungus, ringworm or lice?
Barbicide is a fungicidal, virucidal and bactericidal disinfectant when used at the proper dilution and contact time, and the label includes claims for common salon pathogens. For specific organisms (ringworm, lice, HIV, HBV, HCV), always check the current product label -- Clinic carries the broader high-risk claim set.

Does Barbicide expire?
Sealed Concentrate has a long shelf life if stored cool and away from sunlight; check the bottle for the lot date. Once diluted, the working solution should be changed daily.

Can Barbicide go down the drain?
Used Barbicide solution can generally be disposed of in the sink in salon quantities (it is a quaternary ammonium disinfectant), but always follow your local municipal disposal rules.

Does Barbicide certification expire?
The certificate itself does not auto-expire, but most salons recertify staff annually to keep the credential current. Recertification is free.

Where is Barbicide made?
Barbicide is made in the USA by King Research, a family-owned business in Brooklyn, NY, founded in 1947.
