How to use - Food For Soft routine

  1. Wash with Food For Soft Shampoo, massage 30-60 seconds, rinse.
  2. Apply Food For Soft Conditioner mid-lengths to ends, leave 2-3 minutes, rinse.
  3. Once a week, swap conditioner for Food For Soft Rich Hydrating Treatment Mask. Leave 5-10 minutes.
  4. On damp hair, work 2-4 drops of Food For Soft Multi-Use Hair Oil Serum through lengths and ends before blow-drying for heat protection and frizz control.
  5. Finish dry styling with another 1-2 drops on ends for shine.

How to use - So Silver toning

  1. Use 1-3 times per week (more often the brighter you want the tone, less often if hair is dry).
  2. Apply So Silver Shampoo to wet hair, lather, leave 3-5 minutes for cool toning. Leave longer for a deeper silver result. Rinse.
  3. Follow with So Silver Conditioner - the 2025 reformulation is now pigmented too, so it continues the toning while it conditions. Leave 2-3 minutes, rinse with cool water.
  4. Alternate with Food For Soft on non-toning days so hair stays hydrated.

1. Is "Matrix Total Results" still a brand?
No - Matrix discontinued the Total Results umbrella name in 2019. The same families (Food For Soft, So Silver, Brass Off, Mega Sleek, Biolage by Matrix, A Curl Can Dream) now sit directly under Matrix Professional. EBS keeps the Total Results collection page so long-time stylists and clients can still find their familiar ranges.

2. Is Matrix Food For Soft vegan?
Yes - the current Food For Soft range is vegan (no animal-derived ingredients), silicone-light, and uses avocado oil and hyaluronic acid as its hero ingredients.

3. Is Matrix cruelty-free?
Matrix is owned by L'Oreal, which does not test products or ingredients on animals except where required by law. Matrix is not Leaping Bunny certified - if certification is a hard requirement for you, look at brands like AG Care, K18 or It's a 10.

4. Will So Silver dry my hair out?
Pure purple shampoos can be drying because of the high surfactant load needed to deposit pigment. The 2025 So Silver Conditioner is now pigmented, which lets you spend less time with the shampoo on the hair (3-5 minutes is usually enough) and still get cool tones. Alternate with Food For Soft Shampoo and Conditioner on non-toning days to keep moisture levels up.

5. Can I use So Silver on brown hair with blonde highlights?
Yes - apply So Silver only on the highlighted sections, or use it as a full wash if you also want to neutralize warm tones in your natural depth. Start at 1 wash per week and adjust.

6. Is Food For Soft good for curly hair?

7. Is the Food For Soft Hair Oil Serum a heat protectant?
Yes - the Multi-Use Hair Oil Serum gives thermal protection up to typical blow-dryer and iron temperatures. Apply on damp hair before blow-drying, and a couple of drops on dry hair for finishing shine.

8. So Silver Duo vs Litre Duo - which one do I need?
The 300ml retail duo is a home-use size that lasts most clients 2-3 months at 1-2 toning washes per week. The litre duo is for salon back-bar use, heavy weekly tonings, or households with two or more blondes.

9. Do I need a pump for the litre bottles?
Litre bottles do not ship with pumps. EBS sells universal salon litre pumps (white-top and black-top) separately.

10. Where is Matrix manufactured?
Matrix is a US-founded brand (Solon, Ohio, 1980), now part of L'Oreal Professionnel Products Division. Current Matrix manufacturing for the Canadian market is handled by L'Oreal's North American supply chain.

11. Is Matrix colour-safe?
Yes - Food For Soft and So Silver are both formulated to be colour-safe. So Silver actively helps extend cool blonde tones between salon appointments.

12. Is Matrix sulfate-free?
The current Matrix retail formulas are reduced-sulfate / silicone-light rather than fully sulfate-free. If you specifically need 0% sulfates, look at Biolage Hydrasource or AG Care in our store.
